From published poets to aspiring authors, York is a city brimming with writing talent.
Its historic streets, architecture and beauty have inspired many a wordsmith.
At RED, we’ve got a fair few writers in residence ourselves.
Our editorial team – a mix of journalists and internal comms specialists – boasts about 150 years of writing experience between us. (We were shocked by this statistic too; we’re such a youthful looking bunch.)
With writing playing such a major part in our daily work, we’re always keen to support and champion local creative talent.
So this year we’re supporting the rather brilliant York Culture Awards – by sponsoring the Excellence In Writing category.
Organised by Make It York, the York Culture Awards celebrate excellence in the arts and culture sector and reward outstanding innovation, creativity and quality.
Our director Andy said: “We’re really proud to be involved in this opportunity to showcase our city’s cultural achievements – of which there are far too many to name!”
The Excellence in Writing category is designed to recognise ‘an outstanding York-based author, playwright, screenwriter or poet who has had some outstanding work published or performed during 2016/17’.
So if you you’ve got a piece of written work that you’re particularly proud of, get your entry in early. Judges will look for entries that demonstrate exceptional work that’s been read or seen by the public.
Don’t worry if writing’s not your thing – there are 11 other categories to choose from, including Best Performing Artist, Excellence In Media Arts and Best Cultural Event or Festival.
The awards are free to enter and winners will be announced at a ceremony at York Minster on November 23.

Good luck – and we’ll look forward to helping you celebrate on the night!
